WEB TRAPS: SOME TRICKS TO AVOID THEM!

Hello all!
in our last lesson we discussed the risks of using the Internet. The main problems you might encounter in surfing the net are:
  • privacy violation;
  • cloning;
  • identity problems (distinction between real- and virtual world and the so-called "second life") ;
  • copyright infringement;
  • viruses/trojan horses;
  • hackers;
  • addiction;
  • false information;
  • scams.
We all know that the web space is huge and therefore diffucult to control. There are always new tools,technologic systems and services which increase the potentiality of the Internet but also the risks. The use of the Internet has risen exponentially in these last years; doing things online such as booking, buying or selling, can be faster and more practical, but also problematic. In most of the cases, indeed, you are required to give your personal data, your sensitive information, or your account. The problem is that someone can have access to your data and use them improperly or even to criminal purposes. The key to avoiding scams is AWARENESS. You need to be aware of what online service you are using; be careful when giving sensitive information (such as, your credit card number, PINs, passwords); be aware of your rights; always read before clicking; be acquanted. Knowledge and awareness are always good safeguards against frauds.
I am curious to read what you think about it.
See you soon!
Bye

  1. Hi Francesca,

    I agree with you when you say that knowledge and awareness can help us to avoid risks on the Internet. As I told you, the Interned is a double-edged tool, since it has many advantages but also some disadvantages. We must become prosumers of the Web and I believe that the E-tivity we did last week in the lab helped us to become more aware of the security and identity problems related to the Internet. I think that the list you did is complete and accurate and we should be cautious not to fall victim of hackers or fake websites.

    Here are some things I noticed in your post:
    • I think that in the first sentence after the bullet list, space could be considered as a unnecessary word (see last lesson in class);
    • the same sentence I mentioned before is also a run on sentence. You should put a full stop before therefore and then add a comma;
    • instead of the risks I would say “its risks”, yet this is not written in stone!:-);
    • I think we should eliminate the present perfect;
    • practical instead of practicle (wrong spelling);
    • I would say “account number” because actually this is what they ask for;
    • I would write “the key to avoid scams” or “To avoid scams we must be aware of...” (in this way you don’t repeat awareness – aware”, but probably you wanted to repeat this key word;
    • I would add something to “of what online service you are using”, because it is not so clear. Maybe you could say something about security online... but, again, this is just a suggestion of mine;
    • After “such as” you don’t need a comma (for example: wild flowers such as orchids and primroses – I looked up in the Oxford Dictionary);
    • As we discussed in class last week we should try to avoid repetitions. For example, you repeated twice “be aware of”... You could just move the sentence and avoid the repetition;
    • Be acquainted WITH SOMETHING (wrong spelling and I think you should add something else. For example “be acquainted with online security”)

    I hope to see you tomorrow,
    Have a nice day,

    Francy

  2. Hi Francesca, I agree when you say we have to be aware when we use the Internet. The problem of people like me, who are not so expert, is that of fall in the trap of hackers. I hope parents become more conscious of the fact that children have to be helped in using the Internet and all its tools.
    Here are some language advices:
    - practical instead of practicle (wrong spelling);
    _ be acquainted with something (wrong spelling);
    _ instead of repeating "aware of" avoid to say again "aware of". The sentence is clear enough=);
    _ don't put a comma after "such as": "That sum of money is to cover costs such as travel and accommodation" (Cambridge dictionary);
    _ here are some synonyms for the word "aware": conscious of, sensible, alive (ex. to alive the thrill of danger).
    See you tomorrow morning.
    Have a nice evening,
    ELENA
